Things to know about Recife & Boa Viagem, Brazil

Pernambuco is one of the most beautiful states in northeastern Brazil and is known for its postcard-perfect beaches. Most of the beaches are surrounded by reefs, which are nothing more than a belt of rocks rich in marine life. The effect of this natural wall are natural pools with warm water, where you can swim very well.

Unfortunately, the man-made damage caused by the construction of the Suape harbor has left its mark here as well. From 1990 onwards, attacks became more frequent as the sharks became unbalanced in their diet due to the construction work and environmental degradation. This caused them to move closer to shore in search of food. As a result, it is now impossible to swim safely in these waters.

The beach in the Boa Viagem neighborhood is one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil. Despite the fact that it is not safe to swim on this beach, there are other attractions. There are several restaurants that offer a variety of delicious seafood in typical Pernambuco cuisine.

The beach is known for its different varieties of caldinhos, which are very popular with tourists.

The hotel chain has inns and hotels from 1 to 5 stars along the beach promenade. Most of them serve the delicious "northeastern breakfast" as it is known throughout Brazil, a complete breakfast with local delicacies.

On the beaches there are several kiosks that sell wonderful personalized drinks, fresh coconut water and cold beer.

In addition to all the charm that the Northeast has to offer, there is plenty of hospitality and sunshine all year round.

Further away from the beaches where shark attacks occur, we find the beaches of Porto de Galinhas. The name "Porto de Galinhas" comes from a password that indicates that a cargo of slaves from Angola arrived by sea as human smuggling.

Despite the sad history, the place is paradisiacal and the main attraction is diving in the natural pools with crystal clear water full of marine life.

Amidst coral reefs and colorful fish, bathers have fun from the very beginning when they are taken by rafts at low tide to the natural pools with crystal clear warm water.

And what can you say about the sunsets at this place? Unforgettable!

The specialty of the cuisine, as in most parts of the Northeast, is seafood.

During the tour, several fishermen along the beach offer oysters in buckets, which they sell by the piece. They have salt and pepper with them to make the gastronomic experience complete!

The kiosks and restaurants offer fresh fish on trays.

The chefs bring the fish themselves to the sun worshippers at their tables, and the consumer chooses it before it is prepared.

Meals are served with rice, green beans, farofa, salad and fried cassava.

For beverages, consumers can choose from a variety of fresh regional fruit juices, as well as beer and soft drinks.

The warm welcome is part of the charm of this state and everywhere is unrivaled!
The local accommodation network is very well structured and in some cases offers packages with tours.

It is unfair not to mention some of the many beautiful beaches in Pernambuco - after all, there are 23 of them!

But we want to present a few of them representative of the others.

We will now talk about another famous postcard, the famous beach of Carneiros.
It houses the Chapel of Saint Benedict, which has become known as the "Little Chapel of Carneiros".

The beach is surrounded by a belt of luxury resorts that also offer day trips.

When we arrived, we noticed a huge parking lot with boats, motorboats and jet skis that can be rented and taken to the nearby beaches.

At night, the main attraction of the capital Recife is the bohemian "old Recife" neighborhood.

The 18th-century architecture is impressive, and the Recife Antigo neighborhood is almost entirely protected as a historic monument.
Just next door is the city of Olinda, the cradle of Carnival in Pernambuco.

Olinda is full of hills, which fits very well with Pernambuco's famous Frevo, which is danced with a small umbrella in hand amidst the legendary Gicante puppets.

There and in the old town of Recife there are many beautiful churches and historical monuments.

In the heart of the old town of Recife is the famous square "marco zero", named after the kilometer zero of the streets of Pernambuco.

 Boa Viagem

A beautiful beach surrounded by reefs throughout its length, today known for frequent shark attacks, due to the environmental impact caused by the construction of the Port of Suape, which required the filling up of two estuaries where tiger sharks gave birth.

With a very busy shore both day and night, this beach located in the south of Recife, is home to most of the large and luxurious hotels in the region, with an excellent structure of commerce and services in its surroundings, in addition to kiosks positioned throughout the waterfront.

Our rating

Travel at "almost" any time of the year (except between July and August/rainy season) and a stay of several days is recommended.
Recife has great beaches in the area, but beware, the one or other shark bathes with. But even out of the water dangers lurk, Recife is one of the most dangerous cities in Brazil.
But a healthy dose of caution is not only appropriate in Recife but everywhere in the world.

★★★★☆
